Definitions of Research

Here are some widely accepted definitions of research from various scholars and organizations:

1. Clifford Woody (1927):

       “Research comprises defining and redefining problems, formulating hypotheses or suggested solutions, collecting, organizing, and evaluating data, making deductions and reaching conclusions, and at last carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulated hypothesis.”

2. Redman and Mory (1923):

       “Research is a systematized effort to gain new knowledge.”

3. John W. Best (1981):

       “Research is the systematic and objective analysis and recording of controlled observations that may lead to the development of generalizations, principles, or theories, resulting in prediction and possibly ultimate control of events.”

4. The Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English (Oxford):

       “Research is a careful investigation or inquiry, especially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge.”

5. Kerlinger (1986):

       “Scientific research is a systematic, controlled, empirical, and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about the presumed relations among natural phenomena.”
